How should I prepare for a PET scan?
  • Refrain from exercising at least 24 hours prior to your scan
  • Be on a 6-hour fast before the scan
  • Discuss with your doctor the medications you are currently on and if you should continue with them before the scan
  • Inform the doctor of any allergies with respect to any medication
  • Notify if you suffer from claustrophobia or anxiety
  • Let the doctor know if you are diabetic
  • Notify if you are pregnant currently or are breastfeeding

What should I expect during a PET Scan?
  • You will be injected with radioactive glucose and wait for 45 minutes to allow the tracer to be fully absorbed into the body
  • Then you will be asked to lie down on the table
  • The PET scan is a big machine with a circular hole right at the center for the table to slide back and forth
  • You can also expect the table to be raised, lowered or tilted to captures images from various angles

1. Does a PET scan hurt?

No. A PET scan does not hurt. But you might feel uncomfortable from having to lie in various positions or having to hold your breath. You might also feel tired. During a PET scan, you will be injected with a radioactive tracer which might hurt if you are very sensitive to injections.

2. How long does a PET scan take?

The scan will last anywhere between 15-30 minutes. However, the total procedure will take you approximately 2-3 hours as you will be required to wait for some time after the radioactive tracer has been injected into your body.

3. Is a PET scan harmful?

A PET scan is considered to be a safe process as it exposes you to very little amounts of radiation. Additionally, the injected chemical gets removed from the body quickly as it has a very brief lifespan.

4. What should be avoided before and after a PET scan?

Before the PET scan:

  • Follow a limited carbohydrate-based diet 24 hours before the scan
  • Other foods you should avoid are caffeine, candies, dairy products, fruits and their juices, sweetened beverages
  • Do not eat or consume anything 6 hours prior to the scan
  • If you are diabetic you cannot take your medications 4 hours prior to the scan
  • Do not exercise for 24 hours before the scan

After the scan

  • If you are breastfeeding you will need to wait for 24 hours for the effects of the radioactive chemicals to wear off
  • If you notice symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomit, fever, let your healthcare provider know right away.

5. How soon can I get my PET scan results?

6. Is the PSMA scan different from the PET scan?
